About Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is often described as being in the “Lap of the Himalayas”, and the name fits the state perfectly. Located in northern India, it stretches across the western Himalayas. One of the best things about Himachal Pradesh is the variety you can find across the state. Shimla, the capital, is known for its colonial buildings, pleasant weather, and the famous Ridge. Manali is popular with trekkers, bikers, families, and couples. Dharamshala has a strong Tibetan influence and is closely associated with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community. Further north, Spiti Valley offers a completely different landscape with dry mountains, small villages, and vast open valleys. Kasol, set beside the Parvati River, is especially popular with backpackers and young travellers.

Himachal Pradesh is also known for its apple-growing areas, particularly Kinnaur and Kotgarh. Its rivers offer opportunities for white-water rafting, while several higher-altitude destinations become popular for skiing when winter arrives. Temples, monasteries, village fairs, and local festivals add another side to the state that goes beyond its mountain scenery. You can visit Himachal Pradesh for adventure, relaxation, spirituality, or simply to enjoy a quiet view of the mountains with a cup of tea. There is something here for almost every kind of traveller.

Best time to visit Himachal Pradesh

Summer

March to June

Summer is one of the busiest seasons in Himachal Pradesh. While many parts of northern India experience high temperatures, the hill stations remain relatively pleasant. Trekking routes become easier to access, and destinations such as Shimla and Manali see a steady flow of visitors. Higher mountain routes also begin opening as the snow clears. This is a good season for sightseeing, trekking, outdoor activities, and road trips.

Monsoon

July to September

The monsoon gives Himachal Pradesh a fresh green look. This is the time when waterfalls become more active. At the same time, heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures, particularly in hilly and remote areas. Some routes may become difficult to travel on during periods of heavy rainfall.

Autumn

October to November

Autumn is a pleasant time to explore Himachal Pradesh. After the monsoon, skies clear and you get fresh mountain views. Apple harvesting takes place in several parts of the state, including Kinnaur and other apple-growing areas. Tourist crowds also begin to reduce compared with the summer months. For photography, sightseeing, trekking, and peaceful trips, this is the perfect time.

Winter

December to February

Winter brings snowfall to many higher parts of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla, Manali, Kufri, Narkanda, and other destinations can become covered in snow during the season. Kufri and Solang Valley are popular places for enjoying snow activities, including skiing when conditions are suitable.

How to reach Himachal Pradesh

By air

Himachal Pradesh has three main airports serving different parts of the state: Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti, Bhuntar Airport near Kullu, and Kangra Airport at Gaggal. Due to the limited flight schedules, it is better to check before planning your trip. Chandigarh Airport is another good option for reaching several destinations in Himachal Pradesh.

By rail

Due to the mountainous terrain, rail access to Himachal Pradesh is limited. Kalka is an important railhead for travellers heading to Shimla. From Kalka, you can take the famous narrow-gauge toy train to Shimla. The Kalka-Shimla railway is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pathankot is another useful railhead for travellers visiting the Kangra region. A narrow-gauge railway connects Pathankot with the Kangra Valley and continues towards Jogindernagar. Other railway stations in the state include Una and Solan.

By road

Road travel is one of the most convenient ways to explore Himachal Pradesh. The best thing about roads in Himachal Pradesh is that they are connected to Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and other cities in northern India. Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) operates regular bus services. Both options are available: Volvo and ordinary buses. The journey from Delhi to Shimla generally takes around 8 to 9 hours. Delhi to Manali can take around 14 hours or more, depending on the route and traffic.

Travel tips for Himachal Pradesh

  • Book your hotel in advance if you are travelling between April and June, as popular destinations such as Shimla and Manali can get crowded.
  • Carry warm clothes if you are travelling to places above 2,500 metres, even during the warmer months.
  • Keep some cash with you because ATMs and digital payment facilities may be limited in remote areas.
  • Carry a valid photo ID. Some areas of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti have entry and permit requirements.
  • Follow local customs when visiting cultural places, temples and monasteries. Remove your shoes where required and ask before taking photographs of people.
  • Avoid throwing plastic and other waste in the mountains. Carry your waste with you until you find a proper disposal point.
  • Give your body enough time to adjust when travelling to high altitudes. Places such as Spiti Valley are located above 3,000 metres, where altitude sickness can occur.
  • Consider hiring a local guide for remote treks, especially if you are unfamiliar with the terrain or travelling in an area with limited mobile connectivity.
  • If you plan to drive yourself, choose a vehicle that is suitable for steep and uneven mountain roads.
